If you’re heading into Sydney’s CBD on a Thursday night, swap the after work pub crawl with an evening of live jazz music, a selection of classic cocktails and a setting which will transport you to New Orleans in the 1960s. The coolest event in Sydney on a Thursday night is ‘A night with the nail’ at The Swinging Cat.
Inspired by the underground world of New Orleans, The Swinging Cat has partnered with infamous Scotch whisky liqueur, Drambuie to promote the revival of the classic cocktail ‘the Rusty nail’. This 60s cocktail born in the infamous New York nightclubs and was regularly served at the renowned ’21 Club’ frequented by the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra and Hemingway. Why the rusty nail you ask? Some say this classic cocktail got its name from the from immigrant Scot bartenders stirring the cocktail with a rusty nail before serving it to their American patrons; however, it’s more likely to be from the cocktails rusty amber colour.

2 parts Monkey Should Whisky
Build over ice in rocks glass and stir. Garnish with a lemon twist.
Much like the storied history of the 60s underground nightclub scene, Drambuie also has an interesting past. Here are a few facts I recently learned about this iconic spirit:
- The exact recipe of Drambuie has been a closely guarded secret since it was brought to Scotland in 1745
- The process of creating this liqueur has been virtually unchanged over the years and remains top secret. Only two people in the company know how to produce it to this day
- During prohibition, Drambuie was dropped off on the East Coast in wooden cases that would float on the sea before being picked up and smuggled into the US
If you’ve never heard of Drambuie, this spirit blends aged Scotch whisky, heather honey, spices and herbs to give drinkers an extraordinary taste experience. It’s deep golden in colour and features aromas of aged malt whisky, combined with a mix of floral and herbal overtones and rich honey.
‘A Night with the Nail’ will take place each Thursday night at the Swinging Cat until the end of November 2016. Bar-goers will also be in the running to win a Rusty Nail Kit including a bottle of Drambuie, a bottle of Monkey Shoulder Scotch Whisky, a mixing spoon, ice mould and tumblers, by uploading a social pic of themselves enjoying a Rusty Nail with the hashtag #nightwiththenail.
