Patchouli has been used in fragrance for centuries, and today it’s one of the most common used oils in the “chypre” family of fragrances. This prized ingredient once considered to be valued as highly as gold is a species of herb from the mint family native to tropical Asia. The scent of patchouli is described as ‘sweet, dark, with an earthy woody edge’ which is said to get better with age – much like today’s distinguished gentleman. To highlight the beauty of this traditional ingredient, Ermenegildo Zegna has created a fragrance to pay homage to this timeless herb.
Name: Ermenegildo Zegna Essenze Javanese Patchouli
Fragrance Notes: Zegna bergamot, Javanese patchouli, pink pepper, tonka bean and cedar wood.
Described as: a crafted blend of contrasts, the fragrance was created to highlight the hot and cold facets of patchouli. It tells the story of Eastern leaves from Java which have been dried, immersed and heated. The oil is then blended with grounded tonka bean and cedarwood to create an intriguing finish.
Wear it: Whenever the day calls for a hint of sophistication and refinement. This is a great fragrance for a cool evening during spring and perfect for a cold winter’s day.
Price: Ermenegildo Zegna Essenze Javanese Patchouli 125ml $295. Available from Ermenegildo Zegna boutiques and selected David Jones stores.
The verdict: As many of you may know already, I’m a big fan of Zegna’s Essenze Collection because of the craftsmanship and uniqueness of each scent, and Javanese Patchouli is no exception. The fragrance opens with a burst of freshness provided by Zegna’s bergamot and the sweetness of patchouli. As it settles on the skin, the earthiness of patchouli lingers while the sweet powdery scent of tonka bean adds longevity and depth. I find this fragrance lasts for up to 4 hours of my skin in the warmer months and even longer during the cooler months like winter. All-in-all this fragrance is modern, refined and makes the hero ingredient patchouli shine.
